This work has been undertaken with the object of supplying, in a form convenient for reference, information regarding the sources and composers of the music of The Church Hymnary and the companion volume The Psalter in. Metro and Scripture Paraphrases with Tunes.

The book is divided into two sections, historical and biographical.

In the former section the aim has been to give under the name of each tune, chant, and special setting, the exact title and date of the book or other publication in which it originally appeared. This is followed by such information as has been obtainable in regard to the words for which the music was composed, the changes which it has undergone, and any other particulars of interest as to its usage and history. In a few cases, in spite of much research, it has not been found possible to name definitely the original source of the music, and in others further investigation may reveal an earlier source than that now cited; but in each instance every care has been taken to verify the statements made, and it is believed that these may be taken as at least reliable starting-points for future research. At the end of this section there is added a list, arranged in chronological order, of all the works which have been cited as sources.

In the biographical section will be found notices of all the composers represented in The Church Hymnary and The Psalter in Metre. These notices are necessarily very brief, and are confined to the main facts of the composers careers. For fuller information as to their lives and works, reference must be made to the musical and biographical dictionaries.

The book explores issues of queer youth identity, sexuality, masculinity, homophobia, sexism, and violence in Mexican and American culture, presents a complex view of queer Chicanos/Mexicanos, and contests dominant sexual norms. It challenges current scholarship in Chicana/Chicano studies to expand beyond the traditional confines of male sexuality.

The six sections of the book survey the queer experience from a variety of perspectives through reading selections that focus on presence, recollection, embodied self, men of heart, Coatlicue state, and Jotería studies. A unique transnational bibliography gives emphasis to themes on, or by, queer Chicano and Mexicano authors on male sexuality, homoerotic writing, literary criticism, and fiction.

Adelaida R. Del Castillo is an associate professor in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at San Diego State University, and from 2007 to 2010 Professor Del Castillo served as the first Chicana chair of the department. Her research interests include Chicana feminisms, the economic survival strategies of working-class women in Mexico City, rights discourse, and postnational notions of citizenship.

Gibrán Güido is a doctoral student in the Department of Literature at the University of California, San Diego. About the book Finding Melody Bradley Stokes, police officer, has lost the love of his life, the first love of his life. Her brother didn’t seem to be where he was supposed to be either, if he was her brother; even she even had a brother. It was a mystery and he was determined to get to the bottom of it. During the course of his search he became friends with a detective on the police department where he worked. He got to work a case with him and again they kept coming across Russians who were evasive and left them with more questions. Were they the drug runners the department had gotten confidential information on? Were they laundering money through the drugs? Were they laundering money through a car restoration business? They seemed to be into a lot of things that looked suspicious. Bradley thought he recognized a speeding car one afternoon as the one described by his confidential informant. It was someone who was asking about Bradley. After chasing the car and getting it stopped off the road out of town he got the message that someone wanted him off the search for Melody that landed him in the hospital. With time off to think he would continue to do a good job at his work, helping to change people’s lives for the better, give them some direction away from crime. His own family wasn’t much better but they were closed to changing the course of their lives. So he worked hard, learned as much as he could each day and kept his eyes open for any clues as to where Melody and her brother were. They might need his help, so he wasn’t going to just give up and go home. He would just keep it lower key, so he could stay alive, in case she came back and they could have a life together. His friend Murphy stayed in the loop with Bradley to encourage him to move on with his life. He set him up with meetings of nice girls he thought might make a good wife for Bradley, but Bradley’s mind was still preoccupied with finding his first love. Join Bradley in his search for Melody. Join him in the lessons he learns every day of how a street cop can make a difference in people’s lives and come out on the other side, standing in front of his Lord and Savior who would welcome him into heaven with the glorious words, “Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” Matthew 25:23
